At Apogee Yellowstone, we work under the concept of freedom with structure. That means that we have structure to our day, and that students get to earn the freedom to decide how they spend their time learning. We spend a great deal of time outside, and operate under the adage that there is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. Our mornings begin with outdoor play from arrival until we start the next step.
We then transition to a Socratic discussion, utilizing civil discourse, in which children learn to: tap into higher thinking, formulate an argument, listen attentively to others, learn to adapt to new information (and maybe change their mind), and sometimes to agree to disagree. This time utilizes many of the core beliefs in our code (honor, bravery, honesty, integrity, loyalty, politeness, compassion).
Real physical education, the kind that gets the blood flowing and the mind ready to concentrate! We partner with Physiology First to make real health attainable and sustainable for life.
Academic buckets include time for children to meet their goals (as collaboratively determined between child & parents) for reading, writing, math, etc. They get to choose which resources to use, and how quickly they meet their goals for the day/week. At Apogee Yellowstone, we believe that time management and individual goal-setting are important skills to begin developing as early as possible.
Lunch and more outdoor play!
Afternoons involve project-based learning, in which students build on their skills and develop new ones as needed to accomplish a project of which they can be proud. These projects coincide with the working theme of the session during the year. They put in the work, and then get to show it all off to you during our exhibition days!
